At age 16 Denis Freney joined the ALP. On a teacher training scholarship at Sydney University he joined the CPA and was Secretary of the Labour Club in 1955. A Trotskyist, he stood as a CPA candidate for Balmain in 1981 but was expelled from the Party after he became a member of the Outlook group.
