CEDRIC FRANCIS HEENEY McLAUGHLIN
A woolclasser by profession, Cedric was an actor, singer, director, poet and visual artist. He joined the Eureka Youth League and was involved with NT from the 1940s. He played a farmer in a Workshop How Beautiful With Shoes 1946, acted in Enemies 1946, played a blacktracker with full body makeup in Rocket Range 1947, a bus conductor in What Happens to Love? 1947, acted in The Star Turns Red 1948 and The Governor of the Province 1948, designed the sets for Workshops All Aboard 1948 and Riders to the Sea 1949, played a Trojan in X=O 1948, directed a Workshop The Rising of the Moon 1948, directed Juno and the Paycock 1949, acted in How I Wonder! 1951 and directed Arms and the Man 1956. In 1949 he toured schools in Twelfth Night with other NT actors David Futcher, Ossie Conroy and Lyle O'Hara.
After rejoining NT in 1964 he acted in A Penny for a Song 1965, wrote a sketch for You’ve never had it so good 1965, directed The Alchemist 1967, wrote a sketch for On Stage Vietnam 1967, acted in Troilus and Cressida 1969 (one night he swapped underpants with Roger Milliss as his boxer shorts were not a good look under tights), played the professor in The Magic Travel Box 1974, played Ruckley one weekend in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest 1975, wrote and directed a Workshop A Seat in the House 1976, played General Pechenegov in Enemies 1978, Bob the swaggie in Reedy River 1979, understudied in Oh, What a Lovely War, Mate 1980, played Heinrich Mann in Tales From Hollywood 1986, played the father in The Glint of the Irish 1987, wrote a Workshop about drug addiction All the Lonely People 1987 and was in 1982 and 1988 revivals of Reedy River. His last NT stage appearance was as the comically confused elderly father in Kafka’s Dick 1995. Cedric served several times on committee, including periods as Artistic Director and was made a Life Member in 1984. He sang in a barbershop quartet and used puppetry to teach children fire safety.
In 1951 Cedric married Jacqueline Margot Hickey who helped out in the NT office. Of their five children, Linda (actor and designer) and Robin (crew) were involved in many NT productions. Cedric died in 2001.
