Mel Lowe was on the crew of Lysistrata 1950 when ASIO reported him as a CPA member, son of piano tuner David Lowe of North Sydney, his sisters Mavis and Loris. Loris, assistant costume designer on The Good Hope 1950, resigned NT membership the next year. In 1950 Mel was in the casts of We, The People and The Good Hope. In 1951 he headed the backstage management committee, stage managed Spanish Village, and stage managed and played an old man in The Circling Dove. In 1952, as Workshop leader he stage managed a double bill, before resigning NT membership.

In 1953 Mel Lowe married Pauline Pearson, sister of Veronica Batterham.
