GRACE STAFFORD

Jean Blue studied with elocution teacher Grace Stafford in the 1920s and Stafford and Montgomery Stuart broadcast on 2FC. Grace was one of the speech and drama circle who staged students' presentations in city venues such as the Savoy, Playhouse, Lyceum, St James Hall and the YWCA Hall. She met Sybil Thorndike during her 1932 tour.

Grace Stafford ran the Grace Stafford Studio Theatre, the Modern School of Speech Training and Verse Speaking, the Grace Stafford Strollers, The Academy of Dramatic Art and conducted speech and rhythmic interpretation classes for teachers. After studying stammering in London for several months in 1933, Grace Stafford became an adviser to the Stammerers’ Club of NSW.

She retired from teaching in 1950 but continued to adjudicate at eisteddfods.
