Hughes directed at His Majesty’s and Lyric theatres in London, worked with J C Williamsons and acted with Gregan McMahon in Melbourne. By 1939 – when he directed Bessie Bosch, Blood on the Moon, Golden Boy and Rocket to the Moon -- he was seen as an experienced actor and director. He taught acting at NTL and in 1940 directed Black Hell.

Hughes thought that directors shouldn’t act in their own vehicles. Or, if necessary, only in very minor parts because you can’t see the play from the audience's perspective.
