Des Rolfe played an innkeeper in the 1944 film Red Sky at Morning its script by Dymphna Cusack, with Peter Finch and John Alden in the cast. He acted with the Independent 1938 - 1950, and was the longest serving member of the cast of Rusty Bugles which toured Australia and New Zealand (its other actors included Deryck Barnes and Lloyd Berrell). Rolfe also toured Australia with Castles in the Air, White Cargo, Journey’s End and Both Ends Meet.

Des Rolfe was in the cast of the musical Salad Days in 1958, and in 1959 in the Elizabethan Theatre Trust’s Julius Caesar with New Theatre actor and director John Armstrong. He played a priest in Murder in the Cathedral at the 1960 Adelaide Festival. He was a regular performer at the Neutral Bay Music Hall 1963-79. Television work included roles in Whiplash, Skippy and Contrabandits.
