Person - Bob Bessant
BERNARD ROBERT BESSANT (1893 - 1941)
Bob (also known as Bernie) was one of the twelve Wobblies jailed for treason in 1916. A labouring ironworker, he joined the CPA and was a Communist candidate for the seat of Bulimba in the 1932 Queensland election when he was living in Brisbane. Karl, the son of Jean Devanny , broke up with a girl when he found she’d been reporting back to Bob Bessant on the CPA Central Committee.
Bessant’s funeral was held at Newcastle on 2 October 1941 and he was buried in Sandgate cemetery.
